So you’ve started your blog! Great job, I’m sure it looks stellar and you’re so excited to get goin’. Only, it’s not goin’ as much as you thought it would, is it?
One of the hardest parts about starting a blog is driving that initial bit of traffic, so let’s go over some easy ways to quickly boost your views and get your blog the recognition it deserves!
1. Stick to a Schedule:
One of the best things you can do to draw traffic to your blog is is make a schedule for publishing posts and stick to it.
The more that you publish, the more your Google ranking will improve. That means you’ll be showing up higher in searches, which means more people will be able to discover your amazing content!
Plus, if you follow a schedule, (which I’m so guilty of not doing sometimes!) then your followers will know when to expect new info from you and come back to check it out.
Don’t forget to pop in links to old posts in your new posts, that way traffic keeps being circulated through your pages! For example, you can check out this post on staying productive!
2. Amp up your Social Media
Social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be a huge draw for your audience. Plus, it’s a great way to interact with your potential readers and really snatch their attention.
Consider joining some Facebook groups oriented around your specific type of blog, whether that’s lifestyle or fitness or anything. In these groups, there are many opportunities to share your blog and see others’ examples. It’s a great learning experience at the very least.
Make sure that you interact on your social profiles. If you’re using Instagram for promotion, check your commonly used tags to see what other people are posting about. See what’s popular and what’s new and connect with those people.
Comment on and follow back the people who do the same for you, it’s a quick and easy way to grow your tribe!
3. Set Up for Sharing
On the same side of the social coin, make sure that your posts are easy for readers to share.
The more difficult this is for them, the less likely it’s going to happen.
Make sure that you have sharing buttons on your posts, that way a share is just a click away. The more that your blog posts are shared, the easier it is to garner traffic.
Also, make sure that you have attractive and pinnable images. Pinterest is HUGE right now for attracting readers, so you want to make sure you get on that train ASAP. You can make these images easily on Canva or in Photoshop, so definitely get to that!
4. Link ups
Link ups, or link parties, are amazing blogs that host a wide variety of other blogs. These are SO helpful for new bloggers to spread the word about their blog and get to see what other bloggers are up to.
These link ups encourage viewing and commenting on each other’s blogs, plus, occasionally someone will like your content so much that THEY share it on their blog. This increases readership and your popularity.
Not to mention that back linking, which is when your blog link is found on other blogs, is a wonderful way to boost your search rank.
Plus, it’s fun to link up and get a little social with other bloggers!
5. Check Your SEO
Search engine optimization is basically the ease to which search engines can process your content.
We’ve mentioned search rankings a few times in this post, and SEO goes hand in hand with it.
Now SEO is a little complicated, so for the sake of simplicity, I recommend getting a plugin to help you manage it, at least at first while you learn. (I use Yoast SEO).
Basically, you want to make sure that you’re using appropriate meta descriptions on your posts, which is what shows under your title on google search pages. You also want to make sure that you’re using ALT text on any (pinnable!) images in your blog post.
Don’t worry, I’ll be putting up an SEO post very soon where we’ll go into much further detail.
6. Send Out the Good Word
Do you have a newsletter? Because you should.
There are several free ways that you can manage a newsletter (including MailChimp), so you don’t have an excuse!
Through your newsletter, you can engage with your readers and provide links to older posts and further drive traffic.
Once you have a newsletter though, it can be a challenge to entice subscribers. An easy way to do this is to offer something in return.
For example, here at SweetlySparta, we offer access to a free resource library upon subscription. You can offer things like checklists, workbooks, e-courses…. Really the sky is the limit!
Plus, giving back to your readers makes them trust you more, making them more likely to spread the word about your blog.
7. What’s Your Purpose?
What does your blog offer to readers? What do they get out of each of your posts? Is your information helpful, thoughtful, and of good quality? Do your posts generally flow together?
You will be more likely to attract and keep an audience if they know exactly what they can come to your blog for.
Is your blog about blogging advice or is it about healthy recipes? Can you identify that one single niche that you fill? If not, you should take a few moments and really think hard about that.
Your blog needs to have a singular purpose, or your readers will get confused and abandon ship.
You can check out this list of blogs that every beginner blogger should follow. You can clearly identify each of their purposes and what they aim to convey to their readers.
8. Don’t give up!
Gaining notoriety and an online presence takes time. Even with all the tips and tricks in the world, your popularity won’t skyrocket overnight.
Even when your traffic begins to pick up, you’re going to have slow days still. The key is to stay encouraged while you blog.
The number one thing you can do to make your blog grow and your traffic increase, is to keep at it! Keep posting, keep commenting, keep pinning, even when it seems like nothing is happening.
Keep in mind that the urge to give up usually happens right before you have a breakthrough. Keep your chin up and your typing fingers strong and you WILL get there.
So there you have it! Follow these tips and you should see increased traffic to your blog in no time! What are your favorite traffic tips and tricks?
