For most of my life, I was a ‘late to bed, late to rise’ type of girl, and for most of my life, that worked. I was never interested in how to conquer mornings and jumpstart my day, but all things tend to change with time!
These days I juggle home responsibilities, a growing blog and Etsy store, as well as a novel or two on the way. I love what I do. I love to test my creativity to its limits and I love being so busy.
What I don’t love is having to wake up early to get everything done that I need to.
I’m usually in bed watching Netflix, cuddling Sparta, and unwinding by ten o’clock every night on weekdays. That being said, even going to sleep at a reasonable time can leave those of us prone to sleeping in late feeling cranky and fatigued in the morning.
Let me tell you how I battled back against the war of daybreak and how I conquered early mornings.
1) Stretch it out!
Yep, you heard me, one of the first things that you need to do in order to wake up is to get moving!
If I have time, I actually love to go for a run as soon as I wake up. It’s a great way to get your blood flowing and your head clearing. By the time you’re finished, you’ll be ready to get the day underway. If you don’t have time for that, or if that doesn’t sound the least bit appealing, a bit of yoga can do the same exact thing!
I like to play relaxing music while I lay out on my yoga mat, still half asleep as I stretch out my tired joints or any stiffness from how you slept. You could stretch for five, ten, twenty minutes, whatever you have the time for!
It’s such an amazing feeling to finish your yoga session and stand up and have your entire body just so relaxed. It’s also great for getting centered and preparing for productivity.
2) Switch from coffee to hot water
Wait a second, I just heard the collective gasp of hundreds of coffee lovers at that bold, bold statement. I know, because I was right along with you when I first heard this. Let me tell you though, it is all so true!
Your body gets dependent on caffeine and it gets to the point where you just can’t function without it every single day. If you really want to be able to get up and move around uninhibited in the morning, you should consider making the switch from coffee to decaffeinated tea or just hot water with some lemon.
I still drink coffee from time to time, especially as a weekend treat, but I don’t depend on it like I used to. At most, I have about half a cup in the afternoon. It really is freeing to your body to let caffeine addiction go.
3) Prepare a delicious breakfast
Mmm. Nothing gets me out of bed faster than the thought of something delightful to have for breakfast. Whether it’s overnight oats, pancakes, or eggs, make it something special and tasty so that you won’t want to stay in bed any longer!
There are so many recipes out there for make-ahead breakfasts if time is an issue. I typically make a batch of egg ‘muffins’ every week so that there’s something hot, cheesy, and tasty waiting to pump us up in the morning.
I hope these tips helped you out or gave you some inspiration on how to tackle the early morning battle! What kinds of things do you like to do to drag yourself out of bed?
