I like to think that I’m a generally perky person. For the most part, I’m pretty happy-go-lucky and energetic. I love what I do and how I do it. That doesn’t mean that every day is a walk in the park, though. Even I need to take steps towards a happier life sometimes.
There are some days when it’s hard to be happy. It’s one of those rules of life, not every day can be sunshine and roses – even if most are. Some days are just plain rough, and they can be hard to trudge through.
Maybe it’s raining too much or maybe it’s not raining enough. Work may be dragging you down, money stretched too thin, and bills are piling up too high.
It’s these types of days where you have to put a concentrated effort towards your happiness and wellbeing. At times, this can feel overwhelming and, frankly, a little scary, but let me give you a few good tips on managing your own happiness even when it seems like a daunting task. In just four easy steps, I can help you take control of your own cheery state of mind.
I’ve also got a free lovely watercolor printable download as well, to help keep these reminders in the back of your head 😉
1) Put Down the Phone
I am SO guilty of this. I carry my phone with me all the time. I feel naked without its constant company. If I’m not checking my email, then it’s my Etsy store or my Twitter feed.
It’s safe to same that I’m obsessed, which is not healthy.
We don’t need our phones as much as we think we do. Make sure that you take some time to separate. Put it on silent or put it in a different room, and go focus on a hobby that you’ve been meaning to start or continue. Go spend time with your pet or with your friends or your partner, enjoy those moments without constantly glancing to see your latest social notifications.
Not constantly checking social media is good for other things as well. People only post the most memorable and lovely moments of their lives and when you view these all the time, it can be hard to remember to not compare yourself to the apparently glorious lives of your friends across social media. Don’t forget that they have troubling times as well. Life isn’t always perfect latte photos or smiling selfies. It can be difficult and strained, but they aren’t going to share that around Facebook. So, put down those electronics and enjoy your own world for a change
I’ve also written about how important it is to get outside and embrace nature for the creative process here.
2) Make Healthy Choices
The mind can start feeling stagnant and dissatisfied when you haven’t been getting enough stimulation and activity. Try to set aside a little time every day for yoga or meditation, or even a trip to the gym or a quick run. Being in motion helps clear your mind and insert a little positivity into your day.
This is especially true if you work a generally sedentary job. Every hour, you should take a few minutes to stand and stretch and walk around a little, even if it’s just a trip to the water cooler.
You should also pay attention to the type of food that you’re ingesting. What you consume is the fuel for the body after all, and if you’re not putting good quality fuel in your tank, it becomes much easier to get bogged down and exhausted.
3) …But don’t forget to indulge a little!
Just because you should be making healthy choices doesn’t mean that you can’t have a little fun! Maybe it’s a brownie or a glass of wine, but you should feel free to indulge yourself occasionally. You shouldn’t be dependent on eating or drinking to lift your spirits, but a little treat at the end of a long day can go a long, long way.
Go out with your friends to that new restaurant for happy hour, or settle down with your favorite movie and a box of chocolates. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to treat yourself, and you definitely deserve it!
Plus, if you set aside a weekly date with yourself, it’s something to look forward to and makes the days just that much easier to push onward through.
4) Take time for yourself
I’ve already written several tips on finding time for yourself in a demanding world, but I want to reiterate how important it is for you to put yourself high on your priority list.
I know that can be difficult between work, kids, and spouses, but it truly is essential to your happiness. Take at least a few minutes every day to do something kind for yourself! It’s so easy to forget your own needs when you’re juggling everyone else’s, but that can also be detrimental to your own heart and soul.
Do something that you love every day, whether it’s just a solo walk in the evening or reading that book you’ve been meaning to for weeks. Whatever it is that makes you happy, make sure that you take a bit of your precious time and dedicate towards that.
I know that on rough days, feeling cheery can be quite the process, but I promise that it’s possible if you take these easy and fun steps.
